Andy Brookes

Hometown: Milford, MA

High on Andy's "bucket list" is running a marathon. He has been a lifelong runner, but has never competed in a marathon. He is thrilled to be running Boston for his first marathon, and even more excited about participating in it as a member of the Museum of Science Boston Marathon Team. Andy studied biology and molecular biology in college and graduate school, and his interest in science is evident in the more than 20 years he's enjoyed working in the biotechnology industry as a research scientist and in various other roles. He currently heads intellectual property strategy for Abbott Laboratories' pharmaceuticals business.

Andy's frequent trips to the Museum always leave his kids begging for more, and he picked Traveling Programs to support so he could share the enthusiasm his family has for the Museum with others who may not be able to visit as often.

Alan Gardner

Hometown: Cambridge,MA

Most people on the Museum¹s Marathon Team are science and technology enthusiasts through and through, and Alan is certainly no exception. A few years ago, Alan started running the B.A.A.'s 5K with his friends and family. Now he is ready to take on his first marathon.

Alan has a deep passion for what Traveling Programs is all about. In the past, he has spread his passion for science by teaching physics and computer science to ambitious high school students, as well as tutoring inner city youth. Alan is running to help inspire children to be curious about the world around them and to dream about their futures in technology, engineering, and of course, science!

Chad is proud to be part of the Museum of Science Boston Marathon team. He is a computer engineering graduate from the University of Michigan and feels strongly that science should be a fun part of every child's life. "Running the [Boston] Marathon for the Museum is a great way to stay fit while giving back to the community," Chad says. "Every visit to the Museum holds something new, and I love the way my daughter's eyes light up when she makes a discovery. I'm excited to be part of an effort to bring that sense of discovery to children everywhere." Chad has been running for two years and this will be his fourth marathon. He lives in Boston, within walking distance to the Museum, with his wife, Jill, and daughter, Taylor.

Kate Heaslip

Hometown: Barnstable, MA

Kate has dreamed of running the Boston Marathon even when she only ran a few miles each day. Hearing other runners talk about just how special that "first Boston" is she wanted to be sure and dedicate hers to a special cause. She was thrilled when the Museum of Science was one of the Marathon's featured charities, as it was one of her favorite places to visit as a child. These visits helped instill in her a lifelong passion for science, which she now draws upon researching and protecting rare Diamondback terrapin turtles on Cape Cod.

Running has been a part of Kate's life since her teenage years when she ran those few early miles to stay fit. On a whim during a summer break from graduate school she entered a local four-mile road race and was surprised to discover that it seemed to short! Since then Kate has become a passionate distance runner, having run three half marathons, one 24-hour relay, and one marathon. By supporting Traveling Programs, Kate hopes that others will get hooked on science as she did -- even if they can't get to the Museum to run up the musical stairs!

Ranch Kimball

An occasional marathoner, he was a semi-professional athlete in eco-challenge adventure racing, an ultra-endurance wilderness sport usually called "the toughest team sport on the planet." His team, Tiger Adventure, had numerous top ten finishes, one win, and 29 sponsors at their peak. An active leader in Boston, he has recently served as president and CEO of the Joslin Diabetes Center and as Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development.

Bill Libby

Hometown: Lynn, MA

Bill grew up in Lynn, MA and still lives and runs on Boston's North Shore. After a nearly 20-year career in the construction industry, an arm injury led him to change his job, as well as his workouts, and he started running to keep in shape while his arm healed. He quickly learned to enjoy it, starting out with 5K races and progressing to a half marathon. He also found a new career opportunity working for the facilities department of the Museum of Science. Bill has seen firsthand the great education initiatives the Museum has to offer, so when he learned the Museum was partnering with the B.A.A for this fundraising venture, he had to be a part of it. This will be his first marathon. Running to support the great work Traveling Programs does for thousands of kids each year will be as rewarding an experience for him as completing the Boston Marathon will be.

Paula Petschek

Hometown: Bedford, MA

Paula is eagerly anticipating running her first marathon ever. Running the Boston Marathon while raising funds for Traveling Programs links two Boston traditions to a single goal. Paula has been running for nine years and successfully completed her first half marathon in October 2011. She is now ready to take up the challenge of a full marathon, especially for such a worthy cause.

Paula's relationship with the Museum of Science goes back many years. Educated as an engineer, she now teaches second grade. She has spent many enjoyable hours with her husband and two sons as members of the Museum. This has included chaperoning school field trips and sleeping overnight with Cub Scout groups many times. These trips to the Museum have given her children a great appreciation for science, and by fundraising for Traveling Programs, she hopes to bring that excitement to other children in the community, hopefully sparking their lifelong interest in science.

Chinh Pham

Fundraising goal: $5000.00
Amount raised: $1820.00

Chinh Pham

Hometown: Newton, MA

Chinh is looking forward to running with the Museum of Science marathon team for the third consecutive year. He believes strongly in the mission of Traveling Programs, and he is looking forward to the challenge again, including the many training miles, five a.m. wake-up runs, and wear and tear on his body. He believes that while the 26.2 miles he runs on April 16 will come and go soon enough, Traveling Programs will continue to plant the seeds of science and technology in students for many years to come.

During business hours, Chinh practices law at Greenberg Traurig, where he works with many technology companies, from start-ups to multi-national corporations, on the creation and development of their intellectual property portfolios. In his work, Chinh continues to see the importance of a solid foundation in science and technology. Supporting initiatives like Traveling Programs introduces students of today to the skills necessary for competitiveness in the world of tomorrow.

Chinh's wife Laureen and their children Collin and Caraline will support Chinh and his teammates as they reach for their goal on April 16.

Janet Smith

Hometown: Andover, MA

Janet is extremely excited and enthused to be running in the Boston Marathon as a Museum of Science team member. As a recreational runner for the past two years, she never imagined running a marathon until she learned about the Museum team. And now the fleeting fantasy has become her dream goal. Janet has been a volunteer Exhibit Halls interpreter at the Museum since 2007, helping visitors enhance their experience by providing additional opportunities for scientific observation and inquiry. Janet also volunteers at an animal shelter, caring for animals and leading animal education programs. Her love of science and technology started in high school and continued through college where she majored in zoology and environmental studies. Her professional work experience included 15 years as an environmental, health, and safety management consultant.

Supporting Traveling Programs is a natural extension of her volunteer work and professional experience and she is excited that her efforts will bring the wonders of science and technology into the community. An avid tennis player, Janet is also hoping her extra running mileage will help her run down many more tennis balls.

Nate Thomas

Hometown: Bedford, MA

The 2012 Boston Marathon will be Nate's second marathon. He ran his first marathon this past September, and he's aiming to better his time in April, with a goal of breaking three hours. In addition to running, Nate also competes in triathlons, and he completed his first Ironman this past fall. Nate is a third grade teacher and has always loved science. He has fond memories of visiting the Museum of Science with his family when he was young. As a teacher, he recognizes the love that all students have for science, especially 'super cool' experiments that his students love. In an era of high-stakes testing, science is often glossed over to focus on math and language arts. Nate is supporting the Museum's Traveling Program so that students who may not have the opportunity to carry out meaningful and engaging experiments will have that chance, and in the process learn through a hands-on approach, which is vital for lifelong learning.
